Setting up the Linksys X-series gateway (NT ADSL) using the web-based setup page

The Linksys X-series gateways (X1000, X2000, X3000 and X3500) are high-speed gateways that come with the Linksys Connect Software for easy setup.  In case you encounter problems while installing any of these devices using Linksys Connect, you may proceed with manual installation using the web-based setup page.  This article will guide you on how to set up your Linksys X-series gateway manually.
IMPORTANT:  Before starting the setup, you need to obtain the following settings from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Here Nepal Telecom.
  • Internet Connection Type (Encapsulation):  PPPoE
  • VPI and VCI value : VPI- 8, VCI-81
  • DSL Modulation: ADSL2
  • Multiplexing Type : LLC
  • Username and Password:
  • MTU: Auto
NOTE:  In this setup, the Linksys X2000 was used.
Step 1:
Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to your computer and the other end to an Ethernet port at the back of the gateway.

Step 2:
On the computer, launch a web browser and enter the IP address of the gateway in the Address bar then press [Enter]
NOTE:  192.168.1.1 is the default IP address of the Linksys X-series gateways.
Step 3:
Once the login prompt appears, type “admin” in the User name and Password fields then click OK

NOTE:  If you have already set a personalized login username and password, use those instead.
You will then be redirected to the web-based setup page of the gateway.
Step 4:
On the Setup page and under the Basic Setup sub-tab, go to the Internet Setup section and click on the drop-down arrow and select RFC 2516 PPPoE

NOTE:  The Internet Connection Type (Encapsulation) may be different in certain areas, depending on your ISP.  If the connection type that your ISP gave is not available in the drop-down, then this gateway is not compatible to work as a modem-router and can only be used as a router.
Step 5:
Select LLC for Multiplexing

Step 6:
For Virtual Circuit, enter “8” for the VPI range and “81” for the VCI range.

Step 7:
Select ADSL2 from the DSL Modulation drop-down menu then enter your User Name and Password

NOTE:  The User Name and the Password can be obtained from your ISP.
Step 8:
Host Name: Leave Blank.

Select Auto for the MTU
NOTE:  Confirm with your ISP if your gateway’s MTU is Auto.  If not, choose Manual from the drop-down box and enter the correct value as provided by your ISP.
Step 9:
Click Save Settings
Here are some additional steps to do after setting up the gateway:
  • Powercycle the gateway by removing the power cable or turning off the power switch for 30 seconds.
  • Allow the gateway to boot up normally.
  • Check the Internet connection once the LED lights have stabilized.
